The typical Whitechapel steel job opens the ground floor of an E1 terrace, taking out the wall between the front reception and the middle room, or the wall into the rear closet wing. Because these dividing walls carry the floor and the chimney stack above, every beam is sized by a structural engineer before we touch anything. Old openings, arches and piers in the wall
Very few E1 spine walls are a plain run of brickwork. There is usually a doorway already in them, often with a shallow brick arch or a timber lintel over it, sometimes a blocked-up opening from an earlier arrangement, and short piers of masonry between them doing more work than their width suggests. Those piers are frequently where the load actually concentrates, which is why an opening cannot simply be set out where it looks convenient.
We open up the plaster and record what is there before the engineer designs anything, because an old timber lintel hidden above a doorway may already be failing, and a blocked opening tells you the wall has been altered before. The new beam is then set out to bear on sound masonry rather than on a narrow pier that was never intended to carry it, which sometimes shifts the opening by a course or two.
