Bearing is where the Victorian houses catch people out. A nine inch solid wall laid in soft lime mortar will not take a concentrated point load from a steel the way a modern cavity wall does, so the padstone often has to be longer, or the pier below rebuilt in engineering brick, before the beam goes anywhere near it. We prop from a firm base, take the wall down in stages, seat the steel, then strike the props in the order the engineer sets out.
