Head, described as clay, silt, sand and gravel, is mapped as the superficial deposit at the central High Street, Brook Street, Station Road, Grove Road and Dundale Road. At Akeman Street, King Street, Western Road, the west end of Park Road and Miswell Lane the superficial layer returned no polygon, so chalk is mapped at the surface.
That matters because the load from a beam arrives at a padstone, then a pier, then a footing. Where the engineer wants confirmation of what an existing footing bears on, a trial hole answers it. An assumption does not.
Why the wall you are opening can be older than the front of the house
Dacorum's Tring appraisal describes a recurring local building sequence. A seventeenth century rear wing, timber framed with brick nogging, sits behind an eighteenth century brick main range, with an early nineteenth century street front in brick or render that disguises what lies behind. The same appraisal adds that the rear parts of Tring buildings are frequently difficult to see, and may well include further early work and timber framing still to be discovered.
So the opening you want at the back of the house can sit in a different structure from the one visible at the pavement. We open up and let the engineer look before a beam is specified, rather than after.

Where the house is narrow, the bearings land close to the party walls. Dacorum's appraisal describes the western character area as small houses two bays wide and two storeys high, standing in terrace rows of about half a dozen dwellings. On the central High Street, between the parish church and the Frogmore Street and Akeman Street crossroads, buildings sit on medieval burgage plots rising straight from the pavement edge, with narrow street fronts and long rear yards.

Hertfordshire Building Control, not the borough council. Dacorum Borough Council does not run its own building control service, and states that building control for the borough is provided by Hertfordshire Building Control.
