44% of Angel homes were built after 1945, and the site describes the area's housing as Georgian terraces, converted flats and post-war estates. A kitchen refit in a post-war block is a different job from one in a Georgian house. The floor may be a concrete slab, so a sink moved to an island needs a chased or pumped waste rather than a run between joists. The soil and vent stacks sit in fixed risers, and the landlord's rules on hours, noise and deliveries apply from the day the old units come out. We read those rules before the design, because they set the programme as much as the layout does.

In a Georgian terrace the question is height. The kitchen may sit in the lower ground floor, and lowering that floor for more headroom can count as basement construction, for which Islington Council says planning permission is usually required. Islington's Basement Development SPD says basements should generally not exceed 3m floor to ceiling height. Keeping the existing floor level and designing the kitchen around it is the simpler route in Angel. Where more height is essential, the application and the engineer's method come first, and the kitchen order waits for the decision.

Bespoke kitchens for N1 period proportions

Angel's Georgian and Regency homes have alcoves, chimney breasts and tall ceilings that suit made-to-measure cabinetry rather than off-the-shelf units. We plan the layout around these period features, using the height for tall storage and fitting neatly into awkward recesses so the finished kitchen looks built for the room. In lower-ground kitchens common in N1 townhouses, we design around reduced head height and limited natural light.

From handleless contemporary designs to classic in-frame Shaker styles, we build to match the age and character of the house. Ventilation, worktop stone, splashbacks and under-cabinet lighting are all specified to work together. Choices to settle before the fitters arrive

Two decisions drive an Angel kitchen programme and both need settling early. The first is where the sink and any island sit, because in a converted Georgian flat the waste has to reach an existing stack and a long fall under a solid floor is rarely possible. The second is the appliance list, since integrated ovens and extractors set the cabinet sizes and the electrical loading before a single unit is ordered. Change either one late and the drawings go back to the start.

Worktops come later but need a fixed date. Stone is templated only once the carcasses are level and screwed back, so there is a gap of roughly a fortnight between the units going in and the quartz or granite landing. We plan a temporary sink and a working socket for that period so the flat stays usable. Tiles, handles and paint can wait, but the flooring cannot, because it sets the finished floor level the units are levelled from.
