The units are chosen, the delivery date is booked, and what is missing is the person who takes the old kitchen out and puts the new one in properly. That is the work described on this page. Fitting is a different job from a kitchen renovation, and it is worth being clear which one you need. Fitting is installation: strip out, services adjusted, units built and levelled, worktops templated and set, appliances integrated, tiling and finishing. A renovation may also move walls, windows and drainage. We do both, but the fit is what we are describing here. Fitting a kitchen you have already bought

We regularly install kitchens supplied by trade and retail suppliers, rigid or flat pack, and we are happy to work from your supplier's plan. Five checks make or break a supply-only fit, and all of them happen before we start.

• Check the delivery against the order the day it lands, while the supplier will still replace a missing panel quickly. A single wrong carcass can stall a fit by a fortnight.
• Get us to survey the room before the order is finalised. Showroom plans are drawn from your measurements, and London walls are rarely square, so a plan that fits on paper can lose you a run of units in reality.
• Agree who is templating the worktop. Stone is templated after the units are fitted and levelled, which is why there is normally a gap between fitting week and worktop day.
• Confirm appliance specifications early. Integrated appliances, extractors and induction hobs all have implications for the electrics and the cabinetry.
• Decide on flooring before we start, because whether it goes under or up to the units changes the sequence and the final worktop height.

What a kitchen fit involves, day by day

A straightforward like-for-like fit in a London home takes 8 to 13 working days on site, about two to three weeks, plus the wait for a stone worktop. A fit that changes the layout, moves the sink or opens the room up takes longer, because the services and sometimes the structure move with it. This is the usual shape of the work.

When a kitchen fit turns into structural work

The single most requested change in London kitchens is taking out the wall between the kitchen and the rear reception room. The moment that comes up, the job stops being a fit and becomes structural work, and it needs handling accordingly.

If the wall is load bearing, a steel beam has to carry what the wall was carrying. The structural engineer we appoint sizes the beam and specifies the padstones, we prop the structure temporarily, we install to that design, and building control inspects and signs it off. Where the beam bears into a wall shared with a neighbour, a Party Wall Act notice is normally required as well: you serve it as building owner, and we give you the drawings and programme it needs.
