That is not a bad outcome. Brackets depend entirely on the strength of the brickwork they are bolted into, and in a Wembley semi the party wall may be a single skin, or already weakened by a flue on the other side. A beam bearing onto padstones puts the load into masonry in compression, which is what brickwork is good at. Some inspectors will still accept brackets where an engineer has assessed the wall and taken responsibility for the fixing, so we ask the question early rather than assuming either way.
