There is no informal route through this. Taking out a chimney breast is building work under the regulations: it needs approval, an inspection while the propping and bearings are still visible, and a completion certificate at the end. Removing a chimney breast in Acton's terraces
Most Acton terraces still carry their original chimney breasts in the reception rooms and bedrooms, often unused since the fireplaces were closed off. What you gain when the breast goes
A ground-floor breast in a W3 terrace typically projects around half a metre into the room, and the alcoves either side take a similar width again. Removing it leaves a flat wall you can put a sofa or a full run of units against, which changes the seating plan in a narrow Acton reception far more than the floor area alone suggests. It also removes the alcoves, so any shelving or cupboards you had pictured in them need rethinking early.
Some decisions are best made before we start. The hearth is usually a concrete slab set below the floorboards, so we agree how the floor is made good and whether the finish runs through unbroken.
