Bathroom Renovation Slough

Luxury bathroom and wet-room refurbishment in Slough. Trusted, professional, 30+ years' hands-on experience.

A bathroom refit is a services job until a wall moves or a floor comes up, and then it becomes a building control one. We survey, appoint a structural engineer where the work needs one, build to the calculations issued, and coordinate the application and inspections. We never produce structural calculations ourselves. This page covers the Slough side of a bathroom project, including what to do about work that someone else did without approval.

Slough runs its own building control, with four ways to apply

Slough Borough Council operates its own building control service and offers four application routes: a full plan check, a building notice, regularisation for unauthorised work, and reversion from an approved inspector. A bathroom that stays where it is and keeps its walls is a different proposition from one that takes out a partition or moves a soil pipe, and the route follows the scope.

The council publishes a list of charges for common building projects, covering fees for most types of work, and quotes for other work through buildingcontrol@slough.gov.uk. We establish which route applies and put the correct fee into the quotation, so the number you approve is the number you pay.

Work a previous owner did without approval

Slough Borough Council takes building control regularisation applications for unauthorised work carried out on or after 11 November 1985. It warns that you may be required to uncover certain aspects of the work so it can establish whether it complies. A bathroom is where that tends to surface, because the floor comes up and the joists are visible.

The council states that its building control service enforces the building regulations by informal means wherever possible, and that it is the responsibility of all designers, builders and building owners to make sure they comply. If we find notched or cut joists under an old bathroom floor, we tell you, photograph it and price the repair rather than boarding over it.

A bathroom in a conservation area house

Slough Borough Council has five conservation areas in the whole borough: Upton Park and Upton Village, Colnbrook, Sussex Place and Clifton Road, St Bernard's School, and St Mary's Church, Langley. Two of the five are named after residential streets, a third covers the historic village at Colnbrook, and the other two are named after single institutional buildings.

If your house sits inside any of these boundaries, the council states that an extension there is assessed more rigorously than elsewhere in the borough, and it advises checking the boundary before you design. On a bathroom that matters where the work shows on the elevation: a new window, an extract terminal or a soil vent pipe. Confirm the position with the council before the room is stripped.

Why Slough Homeowners Choose GS Renovation

A bathroom is where a house shows what has been done to it before. We survey properly, lift a board where we need to, and tell you what is under the floor before the quotation is fixed rather than afterwards. Where the work needs building control, we agree the route with you, apply to Slough Borough Council's own service and book the inspections against the programme. Where an earlier owner's work needs regularising, we say so plainly instead of covering it up. We appoint and coordinate structural engineers where the job needs one and build to their calculations, and we never produce those calculations ourselves. FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Bathroom Renovation Slough

Does the cost of bathroom renovation rise in a 1930s and interwar Slough property?

It can, and we would rather say so before quoting. In a 1930s and interwar home the unknowns behind plaster are what move a bathroom renovation figure, which is why the SL1 survey matters more here than on a new estate. GS Renovation prices the visible work, names the risks, and agrees anything additional with a Slough homeowner in writing. That is standard across Slough. Ring 07472 424 226 and we will describe the checks an SL1 property needs. As a rough guide, bathroom renovation in London ranges from roughly £6,000 to £20,000 or more (indicative London ranges, MyBuilder and Checkatrade, 2026). Your figure depends on the size, specification and condition of the property, which is why we survey before quoting.

Does taking out a partition in a bathroom need a building control application?

Slough Borough Council states that changes to an existing building, such as removing a wall or a chimney, will probably need building regulations approval. Whether the partition carries anything is established by survey, not by tapping it. On a bathroom the joists, the drainage falls and any wall supporting a tank above are the parts worth confirming before the strip out. We get that answer before the scope is priced.

How soon can building control look at the work once you have applied?

Slough Building Control states that your inspection plan should arrive within 10 working days of your application, and that you can request an inspection 48 hours after you submit. On a bathroom that timetable matters, because the floor is open for a short window. We apply early enough that the visit sits inside that open period rather than after the boards have gone back down.

The bathroom backs onto the party wall. Does the neighbour need telling?

Where the work reaches beyond your own curtilage, yes. Slough Borough Council states that applicants are required to comply with the Party Wall Act and other civil laws, and that notice must be served on the neighbouring occupier if any encroachment beyond the curtilage of the site is proposed. Chasing a shared wall for pipework or fixing to it is where that arises. We flag it at survey.

Where does the rainwater go if the bathroom sits in a small rear addition?

Into a soakaway, positioned with the retained garden in mind. Slough Borough Council states that its minimum garden depths are set so that soakaways can be built for the correct disposal of surface water from approved extensions. It states that a soakaway needs to sit at least 5 metres from the completed extension. Even a small addition therefore puts a drainage decision into the garden. We take the levels at survey.
