Drainage decides the layout. An Edwardian villa was plumbed for one bathroom, usually stacked above the kitchen, so a new en suite on the far side of the house needs either a run back to that stack at the right fall or a new stack of its own. A detached house makes that easier than a terrace does, but in the conservation area a soil pipe cannot go up a front or flank elevation that the street sees, so it goes internally in a boxed duct or on the rear.
Pressure is the second constraint. Three showers running on a winter morning need stored hot water and a decent cold main, so most of these houses end up with an unvented cylinder, sometimes an accumulator where the mains flow is poor. We measure the flow and static pressure at survey and size the cylinder against the number of outlets, rather than fitting whatever came out. Pumped showers off a vented system are a last resort in a house with the roof space to do better.

Timber moves, tiles and grout do not, so the deck has to be stiffened and overboarded before any tanking goes down, and the falls formed properly to the gully rather than relied on from a tray. Deflection of the joists gets checked before anything is fixed, not after the first cracked grout line appears.
Ventilation and electrics finish it. Approved Document F sets an intermittent extract rate of fifteen litres a second for a bathroom, and in a large house that means a proper ducted fan with a run to outside, not a token unit venting into a cold loft where the condensate then drips back through the ceiling.
