The wall between them is usually a lightweight stud and comes out easily, which is exactly why people underestimate the job. Behind it sit the soil stack, a vent pipe and a run of joists never intended to carry a full bath, a person and a stone floor at the same moment. We check the joist spans and strengthen where the numbers need it before anything is set out, because a floor that flexes is what cracks tiling and grout eighteen months later, however good the tiler was.
Layout follows the stack. The WC wants to be as close to it as the plan allows, because a long run at a shallow fall in a shallow floor void is where things go wrong, and boxing a soil pipe across a small room eats the space you have just gained. Where the layout genuinely demands it a macerator is possible, but it is a compromise and we will say so. Wall hung sanitaryware on a proper frame usually buys back more usable room than any other single decision.
Tanking, tiling and ventilation in an N14 house
A tiled surface is not waterproof and grout certainly is not. Wet areas get a proper tanking system, membrane or board, dressed into the tray or the floor and taken high enough up the wall to cover where water actually goes rather than where a drawing says it should. On a suspended timber floor we overlay to stiffen the deck before tiling, because the deflection limit that tile and grout need is a good deal tighter than the one a bedroom floor was built to in 1935.
Then the air. A bathroom in a 1930s house that has had its windows replaced and its chimney blocked has nowhere for moisture to go, which is why the paint peels above the door. Approved Document F sets the extract rate, and we duct the fan outside properly, in insulated ducting where it passes through a cold roof space, so condensate does not run back down the pipe. Electrics are notifiable under Part P and certified. The zones around bath and shower dictate the fittings, not the catalogue.
