Removing a chimney breast in Mayfair's townhouses
Mayfair's period homes still carry their original chimney breasts, and in these tall Georgian and Regency townhouses the flues are usually shared through the party wall with the house next door. Because the breast helps carry the masonry above, we begin with a structural engineer's assessment of exactly what the wall supports before anything is touched.
On the lower floors we support the retained stack with steel gallows brackets bolted into the party wall, or a beam where brackets are unsuitable for the loading. None of that is optional, and it is far easier done now than later.
