That softness also affects the support. Bolted gallows brackets rely on the strength of the wall they fix into, and in old lime-bonded masonry an engineer will often reject them and specify a beam bearing onto padstones instead. Where the wall is thin, as many SE8 party walls are, the padstone may need to be a spread plate rather than a single block. Reckon on a couple of tonnes of brick and mortar from a single floor, more again where the hearth and its slab come out too, and none of it can go through an ordinary household collection.
