A brick front in the Old Town can be a facing to a timber frame

That is the first thing to establish before a beam is designed. Original wattle and daub, according to Buckinghamshire Council's appraisal of the Beaconsfield Old Town Conservation Area, appears to have been replaced with brick infill in every timber framed building there. It adds that brick re-fronting "was often only for show", with the backs and flank walls left showing their timber frames.

A steel beam has to bear onto something able to carry it down to the ground. Where the front is brick and the flank is frame, the two ends of one opening behave differently, and the engineer needs that recorded before sizing anything. Opening up and photographing the wall gives the engineer that record. Nothing is ordered until the bearing detail is settled.

Building control for a beam runs to Buckinghamshire Council's timetable

Building control is run by the council itself; Beaconsfield jobs use the inspection form for its former Chiltern and South Bucks district area. You must give notice no less than 2 working days before the intended start, then a further written notice within 5 working days of commencement.

Each site inspection should be booked a day ahead, and the council visits Monday to Friday from 10am to 3pm, not on public holidays.
