The terraces around Highbury Fields were built with the spine wall doing much of the structural work, carrying floor joists and the masonry above. The engineer specifies an RSJ or pair of steels bearing onto padstones at each end, spreading the load into the surviving brickwork. Before any demolition, we install temporary propping to hold the floors and wall above, then take the masonry down in careful stages. Only once the steel is seated, packed and the padstones are set do we remove the props and make good the opening.
