A Whetstone Victorian terrace usually has two stacks, one in each party wall, with breasts projecting into the front room, the back room and the bedrooms above. We work top down. The loft section and the stack above the roofline are dealt with first, then the bedroom breast, then the ground floor, so nothing is ever hammered directly above masonry that is only just propped. If the stack is coming off the roof, scaffold goes up and the roof is made watertight before internal demolition begins underneath. In a terrace the scaffold usually has to be reached through the house or over a shared side alley, which is worth agreeing with the neighbour early.
Any flue left in place gets capped with a ventilated cowl and an airbrick low down, because a sealed cold flue in a solid walled Victorian house will condense and stain through the chimney breast within a winter. Expect soot. A hundred years of it comes down these flues and it will find every gap in your dust screens, so we bag at the opening rather than carrying it through the hall. Plan on redecorating the whole room; patching new plaster into old emulsion never matches.
