These walls are solid brick in lime mortar, one brick thick in places, and the middle of the wall can be a poorly filled snapped header core that will not take a concentrated point load. The engineer specifies the padstone size for the load, and we cut the pocket, check what is actually there, and rebuild in engineering brick where the existing masonry is not up to it. That is a conversation on site, not a surprise on the invoice.
In the 1930s semis on the later N20 streets the picture is different. Cavity construction means the inner leaf carries the load and the padstone bears on that leaf alone, so the pocket is shallower and the detailing has to keep the cavity clear so damp does not bridge across to the inner face. Both types get the same discipline: propping in before cutting, load transferred in a controlled sequence, props struck only once the steel is packed tight and bearing properly. Access, deliveries and the High Road
A five metre steel has to physically reach the middle of your house. Whetstone terraces have no side access unless you are on the end of a run, so the beam usually comes in through the front door or through the front bay, and sometimes it has to be split into two sections with a bolted splice plate designed for it. We establish that at survey, because a beam that will not turn in the hall is a problem best solved on paper. The engineer designs the splice; we do not improvise one.
The practical logistics matter around the station and the High Road. Controlled parking and a busy A road mean deliveries need timing and a skip needs a Barnet permit, and on the tighter streets off Oakleigh Road North a grab lorry is often better than a skip because it clears in one visit.
