Many W12 houses near the Green are now two or three flats, so removing a breast means agreeing with the freeholder as well as the inspector what may come out and what must stay supported. We set that out plainly at survey stage. The structural engineer then designs the steel and we build to it.

So the survey looks upwards before anything else. Anything we disturb has to be reinstated to the same standard, because that separation is what protects both households. The engineer designs the support knowing what is actually there.
