Why most inspectors now want a beam
For years the standard way to hold up a retained stack was a pair of gallows brackets, steel angle brackets bolted into the party wall either side of the breast. They are quick, cheap and take up no room. In 2024 the local authority building control body withdrew its standard gallows bracket detail, and since then most inspectors across Newham and the rest of London would rather see the stack carried on a steel beam.
A beam spans between sound masonry either side and does not depend on the condition of the party wall brickwork, which in an old E7 or E13 terrace can be soft, previously altered or already carrying a neighbour's flue. Some inspectors will still accept brackets where the wall is demonstrably sound and the engineer supports it. We ask the question before the design is finalised rather than after, because it changes what is ordered and how long the job runs.
