The remedy belongs before the plaster, not after it. We brush the exposed masonry back, treat the affected face with a salt retardant and use a renovating plaster over that area rather than standard bonding, so the salts stay where they are. Most East Ham terraces burned solid fuel well into the postwar years, so we take the precaution as a matter of course. It adds very little at the right stage and it is an expensive thing to put right once a room is decorated.
