Steel is the easy part. Getting a beam into an N21 period house, propping a lath and plaster ceiling safely and forming bearings in soft Edwardian brickwork is where the skill is. Bearings and propping in solid Edwardian brickwork
A steel beam concentrates the whole load of the wall above onto two small areas, which is why the padstone matters more than the beam in an old house. Solid brickwork laid in lime mortar does not spread that load the way modern blockwork does, so the engineer often specifies a longer padstone, sometimes two courses deep, and occasionally a pier is rebuilt in engineering brick to take it. We cut the pockets by hand rather than with a breaker where the mortar is soft, because vibration in a wall like this loosens far more than the bit you are removing.
Propping is the other thing people underestimate. Lath and plaster ceilings will not take a prop head without cracking across half a room, so we prop off the joists themselves through the ceiling, or set needles through the wall above the opening and prop each end. On a suspended timber ground floor the props cannot sit on floorboards; they need spreaders down to the sleeper walls or the solid ground. We prop, cut in stages, seat the steel, pack the bearings solid, then release the props gradually so the load transfers rather than drops.
Access, fire protection and notices in Winchmore Hill
