Which Loughton houses still have chimney breasts to remove
Chimney breasts belong to the older part of Loughton's housing. Across the four Loughton statistical areas, 620 domestic properties date from before 1900 and a further 380 from 1900 to 1918. A chimney breast in a listed building is a different job on paper before it is a different job on site. Epping Forest District Council states that there are over 1,300 listed buildings in the Epping Forest district, of which 16 are Grade I. Listed building consent covers internal features, so a breast, a fireplace or a stack in a listed house cannot simply be taken out.
Where the house is not listed, internal removal is a building control matter. Taking a stack down below the roof line changes the outside of the building, and in a conservation area that is worth putting to the council before the scaffold is booked.
