It is a short delay at the beginning of a job and a great deal better than finding out halfway through a demolition with the dust already through the house.
The clean up nobody warns you about
Soot is fine, black and astonishingly mobile. It gets into the pile of a carpet, along the top of a picture rail and into curtains hanging two rooms away, and ordinary vacuuming smears it rather than lifting it. So the answer is to stop it travelling in the first place. Curtains come down and go away before we start, carpets are lifted or fully boarded rather than sheeted, and the doorway is sealed with a zipped screen so the room is a closed box for the whole of the noisy stage.
We vacuum with a filtered machine at source while cutting, then clean in stages rather than once at the end, because dust that has settled twice is far harder to shift. In a Hayes semi the last stage is wiping down the room top to bottom, including the tops of doors and the window reveals, before your furniture comes back in. Expect to want the room aired for a day or two after that. It is worth knowing in advance if anyone in the house has asthma.
