Plasterboard on a steel frame and old lath or lime plaster move at different rates, so the joint between the new box and the original ceiling is taped and reinforced rather than simply filled. Where the beam meets the flank walls, the return is squared and the edges beaded. Getting these details right is why an opening in an E11 terrace still looks tight three winters after it was formed.
