Houses built into a slope rarely have one flat ground floor. A Crouch End terrace often steps down at the back, sometimes with a half landing between the main house and the rear addition and a garden that falls away further still. Getting the finished floor level right across the whole rear, and getting the ground outside to drain away from the building rather than towards it, is the difference between a bright rear room and a permanently damp one.

The same slope affects drainage and retaining.
