Nests, soot and what comes down
Nobody expects the volume of material that falls out of an old flue. Fifty years of soot and loose parging is the least of it. Jackdaws nest in unused Pinner chimneys year after year and the twigs build up into a plug that can be the best part of a metre deep, along with feathers, shells, mortar droppings and the occasional bird that got in and never found its way back out.
That matters for two reasons.
