The value of doing everything at once is that the disruptive stages happen once. Floors come up for pipework and cabling, ceilings come down where needed, and the house is rewired, replumbed and reinsulated while it is already open, not in three campaigns years apart. We form the bearings as specified, prop correctly and take the masonry down in stages, checking for movement before the temporary works come out. The detailing around that opening is what determines how it performs. A large glazed wall changes the thermal balance of the room, so the insulation line has to be continuous around the new steel rather than stopping where the plasterboard starts, or you get condensation on a cold beam soffit in January. Thresholds need to be level enough to be comfortable while still shedding water away from the building, which means drainage in the external paving rather than a hopeful fall. Garden levels, existing gullies and the position of the manhole all get resolved on the drawing first.
